Procedure for Entering the School Building each Morning
To ensure safe and orderly access to the school grounds, the gates will open a few minutes before 8.30am. Parents and children walking to school must use the “new” Pedestrian Entrance. No Cycling, Scootering or Rollerblading is permitted on school grounds. Children must go to their class line up area and remain there until the school bell rings at 08.30am. Classes are collected from the yard by their teacher and entry doors are then closed. In the early weeks of Junior Infants, parents may accompany children to the classroom.
Children may not enter the school building until 08.30am.
Parents are responsible for the welfare of their children until the school’s duty of care begins at 8.30am. On wet mornings, please time your arrival for 8.30 – 8.40am.
To minimise heat loss and for the safety and security of all the pupils, children who arrive late for line-up in the morning should access the school as follows:
Leaving School Early
The teacher should be notified in advance if possible, should a child need to be collected early. Pupils who leave before the end of the school day, must be signed out at Reception by a parent/guardian. If you need to collect your child during the school day, please do not do so during break times (10.20-10.30am and 12.00-12.30pm) as the children are in the school yard at this time. If an emergency situation arises, please ring the office before break time and we will arrange to have your child at Reception for collection. However, please note Reception is closed from 12.00-12.30pm daily. Your cooperation in this matter would be very much appreciated.
Homework
Below are sample time guidelines for homework:
Junior and Senior Infants 5 - 10 minutes
(Informal homework such as the Paired Reading Scheme, sight words, reading review).
First Class 15 – 20 minutes.
Second Class 20 – 30 minutes.
Third and Fourth Class 30 – 40 minutes.
Fifth and Sixth Class 40 – 60 minutes.
If your child is having consistent difficulty with homework or is spending well in excess of the recommended time completing it, please speak with the Class Teacher.
Birthday parties/Festivals etc.
If your child is having a birthday party and inviting children from the class, the distribution of invitations must be done outside school, as children who are not on the guest list can feel upset and isolated. Please do not ask school personnel for phone numbers or addresses of children in the class. Schools, like all institutions, must adhere to the terms of the Data Protection Act.
We celebrate festivals such as Halloween, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter as part of the overall school curriculum. However we discourage the practice of exchanging cards and/or gifts in school. Again, those who do not receive presents and those who may not celebrate some of the festivals feel upset and isolated.
