Absences due to illness
Whilst there is no need to telephone the school if your child is sick, we would greatly appreciate if you would contact us if your child contracts a contagious illness e.g. measles, mumps, rubella, etc. There are children in the school who are at increased risk of contracting these illnesses. Parents must acknowledge their child’s absence from school, in writing, at the back of the child’s School Journal (Education Welfare Act). Parents of Infants children should speak to the teacher at the class line on the morning of their return.

Hand Towels
We request that every child brings a small hand towel/facecloth to dry his/her hands after using the WC. This should be kept in a school bag pocket and changed regularly.

Procedure for entering the school each morning
Children should not arrive before the gates are opened at 8.20am approximately. School doors open at 8.30am.
All children (except for Junior Infants at the start of the school year) line up each morning when the bell goes and are taken to their classroom by teachers. Infant Classes and First Class line up on the staffroom side of the building. Second to Sixth Class children line up at their designated class line on the basketball court side of the school. Doors will be closed once the classes have left the yard.
Children who arrive late for line-up in the morning (between 8.30 and 8.50am) should enter through the Carpenterstown Door only.
Children who arrive later than 8.50am must enter through reception. Their names are entered in the “late book”.
Children may not enter the school building until 08.30am. Parents are responsible for the welfare of their children until the school’s duty of care begins at 8.30 am. On wet mornings please time your arrival for 8.30 - 8.40am.

Infant Children
Infant children (Junior & Senior Infants) should not be left unsupervised in the yard in the morning. Parents/Guardians should remain with their child/children until they are passed over to the care of their teacher at 8.30am. Under no circumstances should Infant children be dropped at the school gate to enter school grounds alone.

Reminders

Access to Classrooms After Hours
With the exception of those attending Extra-Curricular Activities, children are not permitted to re-enter the classroom after 2.10pm. This is for health and safety reasons. If in an absolute emergency (forgotten books, copies and general belongings does not generally constitute an emergency!) a child needs to gain access to his/her classroom outside school hours, they should come to Reception.

Entry to School Building
All visitors to the school building must enter the school via the Main Entrance only. They must sign in at the office before entering the building and therefore must not enter via any other door. This is for the safety and security of our children and staff.

Meeting with Teachers
All questions/queries re school should be directed initially to the class teacher. Please contact the school secretary to make an appointment. (For safety reasons it is not possible for class teachers to meet with parents without an appointment as supervision arrangements have to be put in place. For the same safety reasons, teachers cannot take or make phone calls during class time). Parents of Infant children may be able to have a quick informal word with the class teacher when collecting their child at home time. If you have an arranged appointment with a teacher before school starts, please take a seat at reception and the teacher will come to collect you at the assigned time.

Rainbows
A peer support group for children from 1st to 6th class who have experienced a family bereavement or separation will commence soon in St.Mochta’s Pastoral Centre. Rainbows is a non-denominational programme.  If you believe your child or children would benefit from this programme, please contact rainbowsstmochtas@gmail.com  More info available on www.rainbowsireland.com
